Diffusing essential oils during pregnancy, this post contains affiliate links.

I took a much-needed break the first trimester and now I am trying to settle back into a routine where I can actually function like a normal human being. I seriously think I slept through the first 13 weeks of this pregnancy, I could not keep my eyes open. You would think by now I would be a pro at adjusting to life while pregnant, but the only one who adjusted was my husband. he picked up the slack big time. I can tell you that this pregnancy has not been like the rest. I have been a hot mess and my hormones are crazy. I am experiencing all of the symptoms that I didn’t have with my boys. Now that I am in the second trimester I am dealing with a new slew of symptoms the biggest being cravings, aversions to food, back pain, restless nights and I stress about everything.

Essential oils what's safe during pregnancy

I am currently working to adjust to life with these symptoms. I started using an aromatherapy essential oil diffuser and then realized I needed to research what essential oils are safe and beneficial during this precious time. There is so much information out there and it seems that articles contradict one another. I don’t want to give out false information or steer anyone in the wrong direction. So I made sure to only include a list that everyone agrees on. If you see something missing it’s most likely because I too was unsure and don’t want to take any chances.

Is diffusing essential oils safe during pregnancy?

After tons of research, I found the smartest way to keep essential oils in your life during pregnancy is to diffuse them. There have been no risk or reports that I have found to contradict the use of essential oils in a diffuser. I suggest being cautious and skip ingesting any oils during pregnancy and also watching your use of oils on the skin. Diluted essential oils are the best way to use them if you feel inclined to put them on your skin. Pregnancy causes your body to react differently than it does when you are not pregnant. Skin conditions, warts, and reactions are more common during these nine months. Diffusing essential oils in an Aroma Diffuser is the best way to steer clear of pregnancy woes.

The short answer is there is not a ton of research that has been done on essential oils during pregnancy so always consult with your doctor if you have questions and concerns.

  • The first trimester carries the highest risk of miscarriage, therefore it is smart to steer clear of essential oils directly on your skin, diffuse them instead.
  • Diffuse in small intervals. The Vividay diffuser that I have has an auto timer which makes it easy to keep from provoking nausea and migraine triggers by shutting the unit off after a period of time.

I have used essential oils sparingly for the past few years. Mostly to care for insect bites and in a diffuser to help relax and sleep. Instead of hot steam, the look for a diffuser that releases a cool vapor which keeps the essential oils integrity pure. Diffusers that burn oil will change the consistency and integrity. Simply pour 2.5 cups of fresh water along with a few drops of your favorite essential oil and relax. A Diffuser that is quiet and has an automatic shutoff when the water has depleted is a great option.
